Link to a Downloadable File
Updated: May. 20, 2015
Sometimes it may be necessary to add a link to a downloadable file (such as a PDF or Word document) within some of the content on your site. In order to do this, you must first upload the file and then add the link. To upload the file, go to Downloads located under the Content Manager section. Here you will see a list of the documents uploaded to your site. To add a new download, click the Add New Document tab at the top of the screen.

Once on the Add/Edit Download screen, enter the title of your document, for example '2011 Goals for our Chapter'. If you would like to put this document in a subdirectory (for example, you would like all of your PDF downloads to appear in the PDF folder), enter the name in the Subdirectory field. Next, click the browse button to find the document to upload on your computer. Since this example pertains to linking directly to this document, the next 4 lines (Upload new thumb, Members Only, Board Only and Member Group) can be ignored. They are relevant to the actual Downloads page on the website and indicate if a thumbnail will appear next to the document and who will be able to access this download. Hit the Insert button and your file will be uploaded. You will then be directed back to the Edit Downloads screen. Find the file you just uploaded and right click on the Filename (it will be underlined in blue). When you right click on this name, a menu will appear. Choose Copy Link Location (or Copy Shortcut if you're using Internet Explorer) and the location of that link will automatically be copied to your clipboard.

Jump over to the Page Content section (still under Content Manager) and navigate to the page where you would like to add the link to this document. Once there, highlight the text that you would like to add the link to. Click the Insert/edit link button.
![]()
A pop-up box will appear. Place your cursor in the first field, Link URL, and hit CTRL + V on your keyboard. This will automatically paste the URL to the document that we copied in the step above (it should look similar to this: http://yoursite/downloads/2011_Goals.pdf).

You can skip over the next 4 fields and hit the Insert button. The highlighted text should now appear blue with an underline, indicating that this is a link. Hit the Update button at the bottom of the screen and you will now have a link to your PDF document. When someone clicks on this link, the PDF document will automatically download to their computer.
