5 Tips When Attending a Conference
Updated: Feb. 22, 2024 | Categories: Goal Setting

Are you planning to attend a large event, conference or an annual meeting this year? A little bit of preparation will go a long way towards making sure you get the most out of the experience.
Whether it is your first time attending a conference or you have been attending events for years, setting up a to-do list including all the small tasks to get ready will ensure you won’t miss a thing.
Tip 1: Define your short, mid and long-term goals related to the event topic.
Choose the sessions, speakers and items on the schedule that best match these goals.
Some research may be required to figure out whether the session topic really resonates with your goal and adjust accordingly, but spending five minutes ahead of time is preferable to sitting in an hour long presentation that feels like a waste of your time.
Tip 2: Determine your backup sessions in case your first choice sessions are above capacity.
If pre-registration for sessions is available, definitely take advantage by signing up for your first choices.
In the scenario you are unable to attend the presentation most relevant for you, make the most of the situation by going to one where you can brush up on your existing skills.
Another option is to take advantage of the fact that other conference goers are occupied and go to the expo hall. Vendors and peers you talk with at off peak times will be less rushed, so you can spend more time building a connection.
Tip 3: Research, read, and research some more.
It is your responsibility to know who is attending the event, who are the speakers, their agendas and how they are linked to your business and association. There must be a reason you found the event meaningful to you, and research will help you figure out how to get the most out of the event.
Do a quick Google search on speakers and organizations. Taking a few minutes to check out their websites and social media profiles will give you a sense of their expertise and style.
Tip 4: Stack up your business cards; they will come in handy.
Even though nowadays everyone has an online profile in many social networks, there’s nothing like handing over a business card when meeting someone in person. Depending upon the event, you may even spend some time updating your resume. You never know when you might collaborate with a potential employer or customer.
Tip 5: Update your online profile on the chapter directory and on professional social networks – such as LinkedIn.
Be sure your profile picture is recent and professional looking, plus your job responsibilities and skills are current. You might get great business leads that match your qualifications and services.
Taking some time to prepare before a conference may seem like a hassle, especially when you are trying to prepare for being out of the office. However, the time you take to get organized ahead of time will ensure you make the most of the experience.
