3 ways to make your job board the first-place organizations post openings

Recently we’ve heard from a lot of chapter leaders that are interested in learning how they could make better use of their  job boards. Sure, organizations can post jobs on your job board for members to review, but is the post itself and a potential stream of resumes enough to get them to choose your job board over other posting opportunities? Here are some things you could do, to help your members’ employers, sponsors, and other affiliated organizations see your job board as the place to post first. These ideas will also help your chapter see more non-dues revenue.

Often, we find that chapter leaders are uncomfortable with the idea of bringing in a lot of revenue. Your chapter isn’t out to make a profit of course but provide the programming and value your members want. New member dues and renewals may cover the basics, but most likely they won’t cover all the important things the board has been talking about doing. Job boards are an untapped source of revenue that can help you continue to provide what your members are looking for.

Tiered Pricing

Will they have just 1-3 postings in the next few months? 3-5? 5-10? More than 10? Make it easy for organizations that don’t have an absolute number of the hires they need by offering packages of job postings. You charge $75 for a single post, but if they purchase a bundle of 5-10 posts, you’ll charge $600. That’s $150 less than the $750 it would cost them if they paid for each post individually. Purchasing posts in bulk means more value for them, as well as more up-front revenue for your association chapter.

A La Carte Offerings

Do they want to post the jobs themselves? Send them to you by email for posting? Or perhaps they have a unique job opportunity that could benefit from a little extra exposure. What can you offer that would make it easier for them and increase the likelihood they’ll find the right candidate? You could take on some of the administrative tasks, or have a featured post option, which would allow the company to have their job highlighted in a dedicated email, in your newsletter, etc. Or maybe they need to hire a number of people and would love to hold a job fair with your members. Help them organize and run it. All of these activities are upsell offerings that provide value that goes far beyond a single a job posting.

Marketing Their Openings

Hiring managers have a hard enough time finding the time to post their jobs. Marketing is sometimes at the bottom of their To Do list. Could you do some of it for them and charge for it? Send a weekly jobs email to your email database, with include links to your job board and to any highlighted job opening. If sending an email just for jobs would be too much for your volunteers, feature specific openings in your chapter newsletter and allow time in chapter events to discuss the current openings on your job board.

Job Board Examples

We have a number of clients doing great work with their job boards. The Maryland Municipal Clerks Association is one, with a board that’s clear and easy to use. The New York chapter of the Society for Marketing Professional Services has a similar job board. They include clear directions for member and non-member organizations, local and out-of-state, to submit a job post.

If you’re going to have a job board, it needs to deliver value to your members – they need straightforward ways to see open positions and apply for jobs that fit their skill levels. But it’s just as important, to have an association chapter job board that offers value to those organizations that are looking to hire those members.
